In the third quarter of 2022, sales of new energy vehicles (including pure electric vehicles, plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles) totaled 2.87 million units, an annual increase of 70%. Among them, sales of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) increased by 75% year-on-year to 2.147 million units, and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) increased by 57% to 714,000 units.
In terms of pure electric vehicles, Tesla, which ranked first, sold 344,000 units, maintaining a market share of 16%, but sales were closer to BYD, which ranked second, selling 259,000 pure electric vehicles in the third quarter, an increase of 182% over the same period last year, and the difference in sales with Tesla has been less than 100,000 units for two consecutive quarters. SAIC-GM-Wuling and Volkswagen ranked the same as in the previous season, ranking third and fourth respectively. It is worth noting that the fifth to tenth places are all occupied by Chinese brands, while geometry cars and MG (acquired by SAIC) are both in the top ten for the first time, mainly due to the warm demand in the Chinese market. In contrast, such as Hyundai (Hyundai) and Kia (Kia) were squeezed out of the top ten, and Xpeng Motors fell out of the top 10, the brand said that the large-scale delivery of its new car G9 will fall in October this year, so the performance of the fourth quarter is crucial to whether Xpeng Motors can continue to stay in the top ten.
In terms of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, BYD ranked first with 279,000 units, with a market share of 39.1%, but even if sales of other brands increased, their market share still failed to exceed 10%. Among the two German luxury car brands, Mercedes-Benz increased sales in China and Germany from the second quarter, bringing it back to second place, while BMW saw a decline in sales in Europe and declined in both sales and rankings in the third quarter. In addition to the rapid increase in sales, AITO is a brand of in-depth cooperation between Cialis Group and Huawei, and the vehicle shows a large amount of Huawei's automotive technology energy, making AITO's sales performance the focus of Huawei's observation in automotive development.
TrendForce Consulting said that the main momentum of the fourth quarter includes the launch of new cars in the autumn and year-end promotions, and the decline in sales in the third quarter is partly due to the fact that consumers are waiting for new cars or facelift plans in the fourth quarter, and there is still an opportunity to surge sales in the fourth quarter for the whole year. In addition, the wave of car purchases before the withdrawal of China's new energy vehicle subsidies and the introduction of car purchase discounts by various automakers have continued to maintain the popularity of the Chinese market.
